The present study analyses risks of a climatic origin and looks at the socio-economic effects of related processes, both in Spain and the world at large. The torrential rains and droughts common in the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in the Spanish Mediterranean region, and the causes of extreme meteorological conditions are analysed, their frequency and magnitude being described. The occurrence and length of drought periods also receive attention. Lastly, reactions and measures taken to confront this type of risk are discussed.
