Abstract

Between 2008 and 2015, the failure of the Spanish economic and social structure triggered a crisis of representation that created the optimal conditions for the emergence of renewed discourse. Indeed, in just a few months and without a strong militant base, the PODEMOS group surprisingly won five seats in the 2014 European parliamentary elections. This study explores and analyzes the speech of Pablo Iglesias (PODEMOS political leader) “Marcha del cambio”, which was delivered on January 29, 2015, at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. This study will be carried out within the theoretical-methodological framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), populist social theory (Laclau 2005), and the model proposed by Patrick Charaudeau (2009b), which lists recurrent linguistic features in populist discourse. In addition, AntConc computer software will also be used to search for recurrent keywords, their synonyms, and placement to collect quantitative data. These methodological tools will help to determine whether Pablo Iglesias employs populist discourse to empty symbols of their meaning, propose re-signification of these symbols, and build the popularity and national identity of the united people.
