Social actors’ representation and ideologies in the discourses of “Agreement for the termination of the conflict and the construction of a stable and long-lasting peace in Colombia”

Abstract

The aim of this article is to perform a socio-political analysis of the discourse of the peace agreement aimed at ending the armed conflict in Colombia. To achieve this, we performed a qualitative analysis of several speeches relating to the document "Acuerdo Final" which was subjected to a popular referendum in Colombia on October 2, 2016. The second draft of this document was created incorporating changes suggested by the political opposition and published on November 12, 2016. Using these documents, we undertook a textual analysis, identifying the different types of representation of the social actors detailed in the discourse, looking at their inclusion or exclusion, according to the socio-semantic selection categories detailed by Van Leeuwen (2008), also adding into this analysis, components of the socio-political dialogue between the government of Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
