People with disabilities (hereafter PwD) have been characterised according to various criteria that impact the structuring of certain ways of life. This article examines the life story of Inés, an activist PwD, from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics, using the appraisal model and considering discursive syndromes (sets of discursive assemblages). The aim of the study is to explore the discursive positionings and syndromes involved in the process of transformation of the body experienced by a woman activist with physical disability. The results reveal a four-stage transformation process: first, the affections received from external voices; second, the technicalisation of the body; third, the resignification of capacities and affections; and fourth, the transformational event and the emergence of tenacity rooted in subjectivity. Understanding these identity transformation processes is relevant due to their connection with different areas of people’s lives. These spheres are linked to the political-social dimension of identity which, in Inés’s case, enabled her to become part of an action group advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and to express her artistic and intellectual interests.
