Entre redes de seguridad y pagas sin honor: un análisis metafórico del discurso político sobre la pobreza y el Ingreso Mínimo Vital

Abstract

Rhetoric plays an expressive and constitutive role in political reality, where metaphors permeate discourses and are frequently used for their persuasive potential. This paper aims to analyse the political imaginary of poverty and the strategies to tackle it through the metaphors in the parliamentary debate for the implementation and legislative configuration of the Minimum Living Income. From a cognitive linguistic approach, the metaphors were classified and analysed according to the themes to which they referred and their rhetorical effects, using both pre-existing categories in the specialised literature –personification, objectification, war, orientational and sanitary metaphors– and newly created categories such as competitive metaphors. The analysis of the metaphorical exchange made it possible to explore the assumptions that model the political action on poverty of the different parliamentary groups based on its meanings, connotations and inductions. Thus, it was observed that the opposition holds the Government responsible for structural poverty and places employment as the key to its avoidance, while the executive defines it as a collateral risk in the course of life and focuses its confrontation on the processes of wealth redistribution and social transfer policies.
