Abstract

Between march 2014 and august 2016, Brazil experienced one of the greatest political scandals in its history, which became popularly known as "Petrolão". The event destabilized the first year of the second term of Dilma Rousseff, of the Workers' Party (PT), and triggered the impeachment process of the president, in a context marked by conflicts of power and legal divergences. With the aim of describing and explaining how the scandal was narrated by different discursive media instances, this article performs a critical discourse analysis oriented verbatim of news published by the Brazilian magazines Veja and Carta Capital, between 2014 and 2016, with a particular focus on the examination of the processes of representation of practices of transgression through lexical referencing mechanisms. The research, which articulates a social theory of discourse, based on Fairclough (2000, 2001a, 2001b) and van Dijk (2008, 2012), and a sociointerational reflection, based on Koch and Elias (2006) and Cavalcante (2012, 2016), reveals that political scandal is partly textual and discursive, situated in disputes due to the informational hegemony of the event, marked by ideological investments of meaning that break the mediatic discourse and indicate the configuration of the event as a social struggle.
