The process of peace in Colombia according to the State and the FARC-EP

Abstract

This paper proposes an approach to the speeches about starting peace talks to end the armed conflict between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, People's Army (FARC-EP), in September and October, 2012. The aim is to describe the definitions created by both actors about the peace process in their public addresses, through analysis of political implicatures (Van Dijk, 2004, 2008, 2009) and rhetorical strategies used (Danblon, 2006; Meyer, 2008; Plantin, 2011). The discourses analyzed have in common seven definitions of the situation: the peace process as a historic opportunity, risk, responsibility, institutional and social consensus, particular victory and except war. Such definitions highlight two types of rhetorical strategies, called 'justificatory' and 'consensualist'. We conclude that each actor focusesthese definitions of situation according to political interests, and the papersuggests the strategic sense of the context modeling in political communication (Van Dijk, 2004, 2008, 2009).
