Abstract

This article analyzes El País’ discourse on the investments of Spanish companies in Latin America. The media framing is inferred from a linguistic analysis in which the topic, is evaluations and recommendations made by the newspaper are identified. The methodology is based on critical discourse analysis, Appraisal Theory and journalistic frames. We suggest that in its editorials, El País justifies certain attitudes and recommends particular actions linked to the global economic and financial context. The discourse El País promotes involves an economic ideology that advocates total freedom for the financial capital. This discourse is coherent with PRISA (El País’ parent company) financial strategy.
