International trade and port specialisation: the relations between Bristol and the guipuzcoan bay of Pasaia at the end of the Middle Ages

The role of basque people in medieval sea trade has been emphasised many times. Both national and international researchers had highlighted their development and significance as carriers. They have been placed basques in many places with great force, both in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. However, this global vision must be moderated. Not all Basque coastal populations had the same degree of maritime development, nor did they engage in each and every activity with the same force. Although integrated in a general framework largely conditioned by international relations, and without forgetting collaboration and links with neighbour towns, it is worth considering whether the communities scattered along the coast of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia did not draw particular routes, including preference for certain itineraries; in other words, if they did not experience a certain geographical specialization in terms of destinations. Local sources can help us outline some lines on this, but they are incomplete and, above all, late. In this context, foreign documentation constitutes an interesting support, especially in those places where port records are relatively early and are quantitatively remarkable. One of these cases is the English city of Bristol, which generally has port records from the 1460s. This town was also an important destination for Basque iron. However, a geographical approximation to the records shows that the transport of goods by Basque vessels was made by a certain are of Gipuzkoa, the one comprising the bay of Pasaia and the various communities based on it; links which can be discerned through local documentation, but which appear much clearer in English sources. Through the following lines we will address this case, making a first approach through a geographical analysis of Basque boats which appear in the accounts of Bristol.
