Abstract

This article proposes a study of Russkaya Pravda (ru. Правда Руськая, «Russian truth» or «Russian law») from a sensory history perspective. The Pravda is a set of legal sources dated between the 11th and 12th centuries, which, however, are anchored in previous legal traditions, produced in the territory of present-day Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. In its internal structure, Pravda has an axiomatic system of offenses and penalties, mostly economic. The short version consists of 48 articles and the long version contains up to 121 articles. As an introduction, we propose a brief state of the matter of the thematic units where this analysis is part; Kievan Rus (9th-13th centuries), socio-historical entity of medieval Eastern Europe; sensory history with the changes that have occurred in recent historiographical times, and the analysis carried out on Pravda from the legal and social history of Slavic historiographies. On the one hand, we are interested in contributing to the construction of the sensory universe of the socio-historical experience known as Kievan Rus, fundamental to the history of medieval Eastern Europe, a territory that has not yet been explored from the point of view of the senses. On the other hand, we seek to understand particularly how this sensory universe has a specific staging in the case of law and legal processes. To do this, we use the methodology proposed by sensory history for the specific analysis of two senses: hearing and sight. At the end of the article, we will propose a list of brief conclusions about the sensory nature of Russian law.
