Abstract

The present study aims to understand the evaluations and positions in the construction of the ethnic identity of Mapuche, professional and urban women. The analysis is presented from the perspective of Critical Discourse Studies with further theoretical basis on Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 2003; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014), more specifically, on the analytical tools of the APPRAISAL system (Martin y White, 2005; Ngo & Unsworth, 2015; Oteíza y Pinuer, 2019). Its purpose is to explore the interpersonal meanings in this construction. To this end, this study approaches the ENGAGEMENT subsystem (Martin y White, 2005; White, 2010, 2021; Oteíza y Pinuer, 2019; Oteíza, 2021) to investigate the positions concerning ethnic identity. The methodology of the study is qualitative, and the technique employed for the data collection is the in-depth interview. The corpus consists of six interviews to Mapuche women who had to meet these criteria: belong to the feminine gender, feel identified with the Mapuche people, hold a Mapuche last name, complete their university studies, and reside in the city. The results show that the ethnic construction in the discourses by Mapuche, professional, and urban women is determined by pride affects. These affects are configured by the positions and aspects that are present in the discourses, which in turn are organized around the sources of evaluation in the Mapuche/non-Mapuche (Chilean society) dichotomy. The positively evaluated aspects correspond to the fact of “being Mapuche”, which consists of the connection with the culture and the ancient knowledge, as well as the ‘strength’ and ‘tenacity’ of the Mapuche people. On the contrary, the non-Mapuche sources reveal negative evaluations which illustrate the rejection and discrimination against these women by the Chilean society.
